The methodology is based on an integrated, interdisciplinary, and transnational approach, which includes theoretical and experimental tools:

Innovative measuring methods and platforms (e.g. FTIR, SODAR, RASS, DOAS, ultralight-airplane, in-situ measurements) and modelling techniques (e.g. model coupling, inverse modelling) will help to assess the current situation (boundary layer structure, heat island effects) and possible impacts of emissions and air pollution in Metropolitan areas and adjacent sensitive regions. |

Field measurement campaigns and air pollution monitoring (e.g. contribution to ALPNAP, Aerosolmesstation Augsburg) to determine emission rates of air pollutants and greenhouse gases as well as air quality parameters (compounds and transport) |
|

Cascades of numerical model systems for different scales and compartments (atmosphere-regional: MCCM, MM5, WRF; atmosphere-urban scale: GRAL, Austal2000; biosphere-atmosphere: MOBILE, CACHE), as well as different disciplines (e.g. epidemiology, transportation - in coperation with external partners) are used for air quality assessment studies. |
